A former Martello tower built offshore in 1855 was then re-used for subsequent military operations. Pictured here is the Martello tower and searchlight emplacement. The chain pictured around the base of the tower was to hold a boom defence across Sheeness.
To get to Grain Tower Battery, you will literally need to walk out into the sea at low tide along a crumbling path. You will need wellies and a ladder because the steps to the inner chamber have been destroyed for health and safety reasons.
